Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT)

VCT is manufactured in both tiles and sheet flooring versions. They are composed of colored polyvinyl chloride (PVC) chips by heat and pressure and formed into solid sheets, typically 1/8″. They are then cut into either tiles or rolled out into sheets. They are installed using an adhesive on a smooth, level sub-flooring. Once the adhesive is fully dried, VCT MUST be finished using an acrylic “wax” to protect it from foot traffic and damage.

How to Maintain VCT Floors

VCT is very resilient. If properly maintained, it will last for many, many years. If your current VCT is looking dull, dirty and/or uneven, it is time for restorative maintenance. This service, known as “Strip & Wax” is performed on VCT with some regularity. The frequency of this service depends on foot traffic but is generally done semi-annually or annually. Scher Flooring Services will perform a complimentary on-site floor evaluation and submit a written estimate for the required service. This service will generally include the stripping of the old acrylic finish along with all of the soil build up. Once dried, the VCT will receive several coats of new acrylic finish which will leave them looking clean, restored and shiny.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

Today, LVT is one of the quickest growing flooring types in the commercial floor covering market. LVT differs from VCT in that it is considered a “maintenance free” floor covering. But maintenance free does not mean that it does not require restorative cleaning services.
